What made me want to start flying?

I have wanted to fly for about as long as I can remember. I built model airplanes and flew them when I was a kid, and I went to air shows whenever possible.

How did I start flying?

I started flying when I was a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin (UW). I joined the UW flying club.

When did I start flying?

The first entry in my logbook reads 26 August 1967.

I soloed on 10 October 1967 and was awarded my private license on 3 March 1968.

What is my education level?

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering. I have also completed two additional years of study in civil engineering beyond the master’s degree.

I am a registered Professional Engineer and registered Professional Geologist in several states.

  • I hold the following certificates beyond the private license:
  • Instrument rating, airplane single engine land, awarded 12 May 1981;
  • Commercial rating, airplane single engine land, awarded 2 February 2003;
  • Certified Flight Instructor Airplane rating, airplane single engine land, awarded 6 October 2003;
  • Certified Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane rating, airplane single engine land, awarded 26 March 2004; and
  • Ground Instructor rating, awarded 20 April 2004.
